The final season is here… While many of you are excited to just bathe yourselves in everything the island has to offer, I on the other hand am extremely excited to just get it all over with.
For five seasons I have put up with the bullshit! J.J Abrams (co-creator of Lost) and his cohorts really figured out an ingenious formula. The pitch probably went something like this:
JJ: Let’s make a show about absolutely nothing… but since that would be boring, let’s set it on an island where anything can happen. We’ll start each season with teasers of weirdness to keep viewers hooked. We’ll pack each episode with tons of pointless dialog and “possible” key plot items. I say possible cause I have no idea where we’ll take the show, so we’ll just pack in a ton of “key” information, in case we decide to use it later and if we forget anything, we’ll just play with time.
|random writer raises his hand to ask J.J. a question|
JJ: Yes, question?
Writer: but won’t the viewer get bored or worse realize that there isn’t anything happening?
JJ: Nope, we’ll throw in a ton of flashbacks and flash-forwards, so unless they have a Hitchhiker’s Guide to Lost, they’ll just live in the moment and forget what we showed them in the prior season. Hell we’ll show it to them again in a flashback, and rewrite the whole scene.
Writer: Seems like a whole lot of nothing…
JJ: it is, but just when the viewer is ready to call it quits, WE’LL MAKE THE WHOLE FRIGGIN’ ISLAND DISAPPEAR!
|room goes quiet for a second|
Everyone: Count us in!
That’s pretty much how I think it happened. Five completed seasons later and what do we have to show for it? Sawyer yelling at Richard, Kate crying, Loche being Loche, Electric Smoke, fat boy comic relief, Love octagons, dead people who aren’t dead nor even the people they appear to be… and whatever random BS they decide to drop on our little mystical island. All the while we just eat it up.
I’ll give Lost it’s credit though, it definitely has it’s head on straighter than Heroes and it does what it does a million times better than Flash Forward and honestly the island disappearing is up there with some of the greatest tv show cliffhangers, one that comes to mind is the cylon base ship jumping as soon as they plugged her back in, but I digress.
Don’t get me wrong, Lost has brought me a lot of pleasure, but by far more pain. I just think it’s wrong for a show to be so frustrating to watch and I haven’t even been watching since it’s premier air-date. No I came in about 3 yrs ago and watched 4 seasons back to back, I can’t even imagine what it must be like for those who watched from the start.
They tell me it’s the final season… but who knows when it comes to LOST? Also being that its on ABC, at the very least I expect a mid-season hiatus lasting the better part of a year… I find myself, like many others I imagine, hoping that I will get the “answers”… Shows with defined endings always claim they’ll give them to you, but two relatively recent massive shows come to mind: BSG and Sopranos.
Both phenomenal shows, both lackluster endings. I personally did not see the final season of Sopranos yet, but after hearing the ending I agree it is a definite cop out disguised as artistic vision. As for BSG, I was only content with the ending because nothing could live up to the absolutely amazing events that transpired throughout the seasons like Adama’s rescue of the last of humankind from the Cylon prison camp, just to name one. In the end, it felt like the writers knew they couldn’t one-up their previous madness so they elected to just wrap the story up… still technically a cop out though… but this won’t work with Lost…
Lost has done many things that can’t be forgotten… things that can’t be explained… and as I sat their last night, I couldn’t shake that gnawing feeling of hear we go again as they hype the “final season” up… will we really get all the answers? will we get any? I’m not convinced… but I’ll continue to tune in… fueled only by the knowledge that the end is in sight… but I swear on everything Holy that if this ends, with a we all wake up… or if what we witnessed of them not knowing each other on the plane last night, is the actual ending just playing out along side the final season… I’m gonna…
