(First and foremost lets talk about the rating. As you know the site is still being tweaked and unfortunately the current rating system only allows whole numbers up to 5 stars. My actual rating system would be based on 10 stars including fractions. Being that MW2 is not perfect, I rounded it down to 4 stars)
The true score of MW2(PS3) is 9.4, on to the review.
The original Modern Warfare tapped into the near perfect balance of technology(graphics capabilities), story and gameplay with that raw feeling of the madness in war. Modern Warfare 2 tries to up the ante.
Infinity Ward gets grittier and more in your face than ever before, you’ve all heard about optional level… Honestly if you were a pansy and decided to skip it, there still is more than enough rawness left in the game.
The storytelling is decent in a roughneck, A.D.D., spying on your coms, type of way… Maybe it’s because I have ADD myself that I had trouble keeping up, my understanding of scenarios in each level was usually about a level behind, but I didn’t care. I was too busy mowing mofos down. While the overall story and storytelling is a bit lackluster, I admit I’m a bit spoiled by Uncharted 2, there are points in the game where you stop and say “Oh f**k..” or “That son of a bitch..” and you get amped.

The multiplayer is dead on as expected and is the reason Modern Warfare is what it is. There is much more packed in this time around, to keep you motivated and playing. You can unlock and pick your Kill Streaks and you also get a Death streak perk this time around. There are titles and emblem you can unlock to personalize your gamer card and show off your rewards for dedication. All the staples of online matches have made a return too, with the addition of third person play. I have not played in third person yet, simply because I’m utterly addicted to ground war. It doesn’t seem to be anything pressing anyways, just a novelty/extra. MW2 is a FPS and thus, that’s what the purchasers of this game are buying it for
What I will complain about is the audio. While the surround sound is amazing and the music aiding the ambiance of each level, I found myself all too often, looking to the subtitles to figure out what people where yelling at me to do. While I applaud IW for in my mind, intentionally making the game this way to help make it more realistic (the utter madness that must go on during wars), I mean seriously it still is a game and because of this low audio level I died many times. Still the beauty of the franchise to me has always been the fact that you love to play it and think it’s awesome all the while, but when your done, the thought of going to war is frightening and you look at veterans with more respect. The audio here, while not being conducive with better gameplay, definitely mimics the real thing well.
As amazing as the adventure is, it was not flawless. On two occasions I experienced glitches where I became stuck, unable to move around and was forced to restart my last checkpoint during single player play through.
Also there are quite a few reports (including myself) of users who are unable to get trophies.
Online also has it’s issues, currently on the PS3 partying up is not working. While I was completely unable to party up with any friends, I did see someone in my friends list that was in a party.
Any PS3 owner is use to these first week issues and I’m sure they will be ironed out, but in these times of Uncharted 2, it’s growing old and unacceptable for games to be put out with these minor issues.
Ultimately this is MW2 and still a part of the COD franchise sort of, so you know what to expect and IW delivers. There are a few minor issues, but overall this is a must buy.
