Anyone who knows me, knows I’m not a fan of Tyler Perry for many reasons. Number one is his completely out of place cameo in Star Trek, which for me ruined the scene and was the only sour note in the film… and a close second is the fact that his movies are one huge ridiculous stereotype of Blacks… However, I do respect him as a successful Black man and somewhat of a role model. I say somewhat because of the fact of what I think his movies do to the black community… Either way, it’s always nice when people don’t forget their roots and give to charity(especially when they have this kind of money to give away). It’s also always nice when friends support you in your ventures and a good friend of mine put me on to this and suggested it for the site.
Mr. Perry donated $1 Million to the NAACP in honor of their 100th anniversary and you can read all about it HERE.
Mr. Perry, keep breaking ground for us, but I implore you… I am Black with West Indian decent(GO BARBADOS!!!) born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and I have no family or friends who act anything like the way your characters do in your movies. Furthermore, I fear that the few non-blacks that watch your movies have their stereotypes of Blackness reinforced….
You are definitely intelligent enough to see that NOT every “Black” movie needs to perpetuate what I call the BET Myth/Syndrome. So may I suggest you make a movie about REAL life with a Black family as the stars rather than, stereotypical “Black Life” about being BLACK!!!!
Dear Mr. Doobius One,
I’m not a fan of Mr. Perry’s movies. I barely like seeing the movies on bootleg. However, his movies are all about the message. His movies are not made to show how black people are in real life. There are numerous white directors that made money making white people look crazy but they don’t get the same heat given to Perry. I respect the Brother for the power moves that he makes and the contributions to his community.
Non-blacks will always have reasons to have negative stereotypes on blacks (With or without Madea). All they need to do is watch ESPN. The real reason is that media rarely shows black doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc.
Just my opinion.
Dear Mr. Stikks,
This unfortunately is one of those double-edged sword situations. When movies like his are made they will always take the brunt of the criticism (from people like me) because there are so little (relatively) made like them.
The same community that he helps, he’s also aiding in their destruction. Is there a solution? I do not know, but while he does what he does I will continue to have a sour taste in my mouth as the masses flock to his new movie, uncritical of the production, unquestioning of the comedy vs message and left to love something they truly have no comparison for.
All I’m trying to say is, make the fun movies that people appreciate on a comical level, but when you “make it” push yourself to at the very least attempt to do better and make something that has the best “message” one that is simply there without screaming for attention. Then sprinkle those, in with the kool aid.
I will forever be a child of the Cosby era… And that is the benchmark for what Perry should be trying to do.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment.
